Jan, I have to disagree with your comment. As a global community, we face the fact that we've developed a way of living, which is not sustainable. If we want to continue surviving (and especially in our nice habitat) we have no choice but to change the way we all live. That's what makes those carbon credits you mentioned so significant.

Changing the way we live means things will not continue in the way we're accustomed.

That the British government has had to purchase carbon credits, ought to be considered with respect to the requirement for change. Either you change or you pay until you do change. And when you neglect to amend your ways, what you pay goes toward helping others change in a sustainable direction--so in that sense you're still contributing toward positive change.

Harper's Conservatives have caused Canada to let the entire world down. They've followed a path of great inaction; soon that will cost us much more dearly than any requirement to purchase carbon credits currently would.

And by the way, had the Conservatives actually followed through with Kyoto we could be in a situation where we complied without having to purchase carbon credits (no reason to assume that because the UK did Canada would have had to), while generating great new green jobs for our unemployed populace.

Josh,
We are very fortunate that Harper had enough brains to scrap the Kyoto accord. Britain made the mistake of signing on and will pay dearly for it. The British government has just committed 60 million pounds to purchasing "carbon credits" from China and India to offset the heating of government buildings. The brokers of this deal will take 9 million pounds in this transaction. Nice work if you can get it! Too bad Brown's gov't. couldn't just invest that money into doing their own renovations, hiring tax-paying Brits and contributing to their own devastated economy. Kyoto and Copenhagen were nothing more than massive wealth transfer schemes, and now shown to be ineffective in terms of improving carbon emissions on the planet. But you're entitled to continue drinking that Liberal kool-aid.
